Some thoughts on November yoga poses....

I've heard from many people that November is the start of freezing cold, the start of stressful holidays. Not really a time to be enjoyed. I can't help but think, its my favorite time of year, especially for yoga. As the weather changes, our attention is drawn more to needs of the body, if only in an effort to feel warmth and comfort. So here it is, my winter challenge:

Find comfort on the yoga mat. Breathe. Instead of stretching outward, lengthening, bring yourself inward. Twist. Hug. Find a post that brings you face-to-face with yourself. Find one thing that you can thank yourself for, whether its successful weight loss, or just finding a smile at the end of a tough day. Share this one thing at your table this Thanksgiving!

  • Savasana (corpse pose): relax the body, allowing all the muscles in the back and hips release. Notice what challenges you in this pose, what comes to mind as you focus?
  • Balasana (Child's pose): find comfort and safety in this basic forward fold.  Allow your back to gently stretch, relaxing the neck. How do you give yourself permission to relax?
  • Tree pose: find what it is that makes you balance, an inner strength or just a belief that you can hold on  a little longer?

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” ― Edith Sitwell
